I think it hit after 5500. I don't get it. Not like 5501 takes up more space than 5499

He has deliberately not *cleared* his notifications by properly checking them in months. Finally, he obtained so many pending notifications that Kinja went into an error state. Well, in so far as Kinja has any kind of special error state past the normal level of error.
We've been getting updates periodically as he has reached new thresholds, and this is (presumably) the final one.

I just use private view so it doesn't reset the counter. But now I don't know when there are new notifications.

I wonder do you still get infinity on mobile? You may want to give that a try. You can do so quickly by squeezing your desktop browser down to a very thin width.
